LEATHER

PRESENTATION

The leather sector continues to represent one of the most important sectors of the Moroccan craft industry, considered as a historical sector with a high export potential in the Moroccan industry.

The term “leather goods” finds its direct etymology in Morocco, it is in the fourteenth century that we begin to hear about “maroquin”, a word that designates the leather of goat and sheep from Morocco. Maroquinerie thus gave its name to the industry and trade of small leather objects.

Leather work is considered an ancestral art and a culture that has permeated several Moroccan cities such as: Meknes, Marrakech, Rabat, Tetouan, Tangier, where more than 50% of the leather production comes from. But the city of Fez remains the source of know-how of this traditional art.

TECHNIQUES

Leather is the result of the transformation by tanning the skin, into a durable product. This technique is carried out thanks to the know-how of the tanners and the leather workers.

Each skin has its own particularity: the treatments differ according to the types of leather, the leather goods are created with multiple leathers of animal origin: we distinguish the classic skins, in particular the cow and the sheep and the exotic skins like snakes, crocodiles and fish.

The work of the leather passes by several techniques and creation which diversify like the brodery, the skinning and the gildings.

Known for its resistance and its quality, new uses have been developed and leather has become the essential touch in the luxury industry and in contemporary decoration.
